And I Darken – shows the beauty that lies within the darkness. Even the best intentions can lead to blood shed. I was very wary to pick up this book because I wasn’t a fan of Kiersten White’s other novels but damn…this is a fantastic story! It deals with family struggles, the power of women, lbtg rights, and religion while delivering a well written story that will leave you in shock and begging for more.
I am so happy that this book came with a map because if it didn’t I would be so confused (ever fantasy book needs to have a map)! The story takes place in Transylvania with the birth of a girl, Lada, who is the main character and she is takes bad-ass characters to a new level. The story then unfolds to the birth of her brother, Radu, and he nothing like Lada. The two find themselves in confusing times – growing up without a mother, living under a cruel father, and in a kingdom that is falling apart. We follow Lada and her brother from their birth to children then into young adult. They will come face to face with all their dark secrets and make choices no one should have to make.
I don’t want to go into a lot of details because this is a spoil free review. If you feel like you need more of a summary then please look above for the link to Goodreads.
There are a lot of characters within this book but that is not unusual for a fantasy novel and this book is no acceptation. You will met some characters who doesn’t have a big part..yet and some that you will see a lot but they all play a part. This novel is both character and plot driven. The plot flows well and you don’t feel rush or confused about the passage of time. I am very curious if Kiersten White will keep having “long passages of time” in the next books for the series because I am all game for seeing the adult Lada!
I highly recommend this book and you might be wondering why I only gave it 4.5 stars and not a full 5 star. The only reason it was a tiny bit show in some areas near the beginning but that is all. You should buy this book because it is one of the best I read this year along with A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas and Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Also, the ending was perfect! That last line gave me chill-bumps. I need the next book now!
And I Darken is a beautifully written fantasy book that tackles many issues that we still face today! I can see why there is so much hype around this novel.
